Peter, Sam and Henry worked solidly on clearing stones from the barn that have been there for 5 years following on from some walls being knocked down right at the start of the renovation project! The VW Beetle wasn’t really up to the job and I certainly wasn’t prepared to let it be filled with dust and stones anyway, so we borrowed Fergus’ ex-postal van and trailer. After 5 trips to the dechetterie (tip) Peter came back with a bottle of champagne from one of the men working there…not the thing you would usually expect but he wanted the stones for a wall he was building so rewarded us with a bottle of bubbly! I feel like the ‘only in France’ expression is appropriate here!
